Letter to a Student

Below is a letter from Vernon to a local college student.

January 24, 2006

Sedira,

Today, I had a visit from your mother and Paulette. I told her that I wrote you a brief letter along with John Miller letter to your roommate. But still I feel I must write you this one.

When I received your letter it felt good to know I have a friend such as you. It also Sedira made me appreciate the Bible. Christ and people such as yourself makes me want to live a long and fulfilling life. My fulfillment would be touching peoples lives in a positive way. To give them meaning to the purposes they take up in life. One of my goals is to show people especially young people sometimes you will grow old in fighting a cause for good. But when you prove that you want change in an evil event, more people will have to take notice and join your effort. Every opportunity you get you must speak against a wrong. Sometimes your words will fall on deaf ears. That the way it is. But your aggressiveness will not always fail.

We have met and friendship have develop from our meeting. However we met the friendship has mature. We know what this struggle is about. No matter if I or you perish we know in our soul what remain to do.

Sedira make your being always ready for heartbreak. Heartbreak comes with this struggle because of the closeness that grows. Just know it is part of the struggle.

Love you
Peace & Blessing

all i got to say is if you murder and you are given the death penalty you should not get the chance to waste tax money by being there for us to house and feed for so long firing squad or hanging would be just fine bullets dont cost much and you can reuse a rope i dont feel pity for you or all those that diserve what you got coming

Mr. Evens' numerous and desperate attempts to have his execution stayed pale in comparison to the fear and pain his victims exrperienced in their final moments. His pain during his final moments will come nowhere near the pain they experienced during their brutal murders. I would be thankful that this is 2006 and hangings and firing squads are a thing of the past. Crual and unusual? Take the needle over the bullet and rope anyday.

May God have mercy on your soul.

Even if we set moral arguments aside, it's a myth that the death penalty saves money. States spend much more money on capital cases than they would if they simply locked up these prisoners for life.

In fact, New Jersey has spend 253 million dollars on their death penalty system since 1983 that has yet to execute anyone.

Florida has spend an average of $55 million per year on 44 executions since 1976. That's an average of $24 million per execution!

Is this worth it to you?

Now, think about the moral issues here. We say it's wrong to kill another human being. So, is it wrong to kill or not? How can we stand on high moral ground and tell people that they are evil for killing and then kill them.

srspacemonkey,
Let's see if you still maintain your idealistic moral high ground when it's your mother/sister/wife (fill in the blank) that's taken away from you...

Well I have had 2 friends murdered, Dreamer. 1 in a hit run and one strangled, I would never in a million years, want to take another life, what would it achive?
God says, Love your neighbour as yourself, and forgive as God forgives you. It is almost impossible to forgive but you must try.
I really want to go to heaven, and the only way is Jesus's way, so I must follow his teaching, and forgive.
I cannot find anywhere in the New Testament that says it is right kill in revenge, just to Love and forgive.

The purported servicemen appear to be aware that they are being filmed.

Pentagon spokesman Capt John Kirby said in a statement: "We are deeply troubled by the video. Whoever it is, and whatever the circumstances - which we know is under investigation - it is egregious behaviour and unacceptable for a member of the military."

Marine Corps headquarters at the Pentagon said in a statement: "The actions portrayed are not consistent with our core values and are not indicative of the character of the Marines in our Corps. This matter will be fully investigated.''
